Know About the Three Main Processes of Sheet Metal Fabrication

Sheet metal fabrication is a general term that covers a wide range of processes that use sheet metal to build machines and structures. This complex process involves different professionals who use various kinds of machinery and designs to get the desired products.

Businesses that specialise in the process are commonly known as fabrication shops, are in constant touch with the stainless steel suppliers in Melbourne, for their raw materials. These services providers would discuss with the client to know about the product specification. They generally have a few templates, which would help in providing a rough piece. If the client were satisfied, then they would go forward with the manufacturing process.

The most common processes that these professionals use to get the shape are

  • ‘Forming’: This could be the initial process, which includes stamping, bending, stretching and roll- forming. This technique helps in providing the shape and contour of the piece so that it can fit perfectly.
  1. Stamping: The worker would use a single dye to press the metal into the desired form. It generally involves two pieces of the mould; the metal sheet is placed in between to get the shape.
  2. Bending: A few would use press brakes, while others would use hands.
  3. Stretching: A stretcher, hammer and dolly or other equipment are brought in to the get the desired thickness of the sheet.
  4. Roll-forming: It is quite similar to bending, in which the sheet metal passes through a pair of rolls, to form the material into the right shape so that it can be bent to form a coil like structure.
  • Cutting: Experts classify the process into two variations, one with shears and one without shear. It involves a primary cutting blade. Blanking and shearing come under shear cutting, while laser cutting, plasma, water cutting and machining are known as non-shear cutting technique.
  • Joining: Welding, brazing, riveting and adhesives are forms of joining different parts to get the central machinery or item.

With the help of professionals, the process becomes easy and results in perfection.
